Memecat is not a new meme. Memecat is not a 4chan meme. Memecat predates 4chan entirely.

The earliest known use of Memecat was on http://2ch.net — the original anonymous Japanese textboard, the one that inspired 4chan — in the Kitchen Board on JULY 7th, 2000. Twenty-five years ago.

The Memecat copypasta was a piece of Shift_JIS art — a form of text-based ASCII art native to Japanese bulletin boards — that was designed to be copied and pasted everywhere until it became a meme. A meme about becoming a meme. In the year 2000.

July 7, 2000 — 2ch.net Kitchen Board. Memecat appears as Shift_JIS ASCII art on the biggest anonymous Japanese textboard. The copypasta tells people to paste the cat everywhere until it becomes a meme. It is the first known self-aware viral internet meme.

2003

4chan is founded. Memetcat predates 4chan by 3 years. 4chan was itself inspired by 2ch.net. The original lives upstream of everything that came after.

2005

Caturday begins on 4chan /b/. LOLcats emerge. The Western internet discovers cat memes — 5 years after Memecat already existed on 2ch.

2007

Western spread. The Memecat copypasta migrates to MySpace and early Facebook. The English version ("Help memecat take over Fandom") spreads across forums and social media.

2025

Memecat launches on Solana. 25 years after its first appearance on 2ch.net, the original internet cat gets its token. We are just early.
